Understanding the Nonpartisan Ballot in Monroe County

The Chief Magistrate Judge is an independent, nonpartisan office serving all citizens of Monroe County. Because this is a nonpartisan election, every registered voter can cast a ballot for Stewart regardless of political party affiliation. Whether you select a Democratic ballot, a Republican ballot, or a Nonpartisan ballot during voting, Stewart’s name will appear. Our commitment is strictly to equal, unbiased application of the law, free from political pressure or partisan agendas.

The Purpose and Responsibilities of the Magistrate Court

Often called the "People's Court," the Monroe County Magistrate Court handles critical, day-to-day legal matters for local residents without requiring costly legal representation. Key responsibilities include:

  • Civil Claims & Dispute Resolution: Presiding over civil claims under $15,000, including landlord-tenant matters, contract disputes, and property conflicts.

  • Warrant Review & Probable Cause: Reviewing search warrants and arrest warrants submitted by law enforcement with careful constitutional scrutiny.

  • Preliminary & Bond Hearings: Conducting timely initial appearances and setting appropriate bail conditions to protect both community safety and individual rights.

  • County Ordinance Enforcement: Adjudicating citations regarding local codes, zoning issues, and neighborhood safety standards.
